Weltbienentag – Warum wir den 20. Mai den Bienen widmen

World Bee Day - Why we dedicate May 20 to bees

On May 20, we celebrate World Bee Day - a date that was not chosen by chance: It is the birthday of Anton Janša, a Slovenian pioneer of modern beekeeping. The United Nations established this day to draw attention to the immense importance of bees for our environment and food security.

Why are bees so important?

Bees pollinate around 75% of our crops. Without them, many fruits, vegetables and grains would not exist - or only in very small quantities. They are therefore not only a miracle of nature, but also real food suppliers and tireless helpers in agriculture.

A day for reflection and participation

World Bee Day is an invitation to take a closer look at these small pollinators - and also at the challenges they face: Pesticides, monocultures, climate change and habitat loss are affecting them worldwide.

What can you do? Even small things can help, such as

  • Planting flowers in the garden or on the balcony

  • Buying organic products

  • Pay attention to chemical-free garden care

On May 20, we not only celebrate bees - we also celebrate our shared responsibility for a healthy and species-rich future. Because if the bees are doing well, we are doing well too.
